AMERICAN DYNASTIES / RESEARCH EDITION 01

Reading
the archive.

A line is a specific historical claim. A cluster is a curatorial choice. The distinction stays visible throughout this register.

15 selected families87 people & institutions115 documented claims3 interpretive claims

01 / What is included

The initial selection is Adams, Cabot, Lowell, Lodge, Roosevelt, Rockefeller, Du Pont, Mellon, Astor, Vanderbilt, Whitney, Harriman, Kennedy, Bush and Walker. It explores distinct routes from inherited wealth or cultural standing to institutional and public influence. Inclusion is not a ranking of wealth, virtue or present-day political power.

The selection privileges prominent northeastern and national families and is deliberately incomplete. It does not represent all American elites, regions, racial communities or forms of power. Women, marriage partners and civic founders appear as people with their own documented roles.

Family summaries and membership are editorial indexing, based on the cited biographical record. Married people may be indexed under their birth family to preserve visible bridges. Shared surnames do not establish kinship; adoption and step-relations would require explicit statements. Missing generations remain missing.

Boston Brahmins is a historical term for a selective Boston social milieu. Its group connections are interpretive and do not imply legal hereditary status, a single family tree, universal membership or personal acquaintance among everyone linked.

02 / Evidence & direction

Documented means the cited institutional biography, archive description or official history explicitly supports the relationship statement. This is source-level verification, not a claim that the underlying archive is complete or independently corroborated. Biographical dates and summaries are linked to sources in each node’s detail panel.

Interpretive means a source supports historical context, while placing a person or family in the grouping is this project’s editorial reading. Dotted lines identify these claims. Their sources are disclosed rather than presented as proof of kinship.

RelationReading the line
BloodDocumented parent → child. No fabricated links across omitted generations.
MarriageDocumented spouses; symmetric. A double oxblood line distinguishes marriage from parentage.
PoliticsPerson → office or political institution. Sharing an office does not imply succession by family arrangement.
BusinessPerson → company for a stated founder, partner, leadership or ownership role.
EducationPerson → educational institution for a specified attendance or academic role.
PhilanthropyPerson → institution for a stated founding, donation or civic support role.
Social / regionalA stated association or contextual grouping. Interpretive membership stays separately marked.

The register opens with a chronological connection map. Each family has one representative: the earliest individual already included in this sourced edition. This does not assert the first known ancestor of the surname. The two colonial anchors use documented arrival or activity dates rather than uncertain birth years. The portrait map scrolls vertically with the page. Family rails are arranged to separate portraits from nearby years; their horizontal order has no historical meaning. The vertical axis uses a single linear scale from 1600 to 2026. Sticky rail names preserve context as earlier portraits scroll out of view. Shared institutions have separate narrow rails, with their founding or contextual starting date identified.

A relationship connects dated ports at its own recorded start year, rather than originating from the family representative’s portrait. The claim detail names the actual people, any recorded end year, and the date basis. Internal family records appear as points on the family’s column; coincident records can be read together. Seventeen records involving institutions specific to one family are available in family focus. The guide rails organize records through time and do not assert continuous power or an unbroken ancestry chain. A rail ends at the latest dated record for that family or institution.

The focused tree arranges documented parent-child links into generations, places represented spouses beside one another, and keeps institutions in a separate band below. Earlier records without represented ancestry links remain unconnected. Filter changes preserve these positions. Horizontal distance does not measure influence, geography or coordinated control. The optional family index’s regional and thematic entry points are editorial composition.

03 / Time & filters

People usually carry birth and death years; colonial anchors with uncertain birth dates instead carry documented activity dates, explained in their summaries. Institutions carry a founding year and, where applicable, a closing year. An open-ended date is shown with a trailing dash. Family dates describe the selected historical scope, not continuous leadership or a legal lifespan.

Era filters match claim intervals: a claim is included when its start through end overlaps the selected era. If end is null, filtering treats the claim as an event at start, rather than assuming it lasted to the present. Thus a parent-child claim is indexed to the child’s birth, and an undated marriage end does not become an asserted lifelong union. dateBasis explains each interval. An era is a viewing aid, not a claim of uninterrupted family prominence.

Family members remain visible when you focus a family, even if their dated claims fall outside the selected period. Faded nodes have no relationships matching the current filters. The focused counter reports claims for that family alongside the archive-wide count.

Relationship checkboxes operate together with the era and interpretive-grouping filter. “Reset filters” restores all relationships and periods while preserving the family you are reading.

04 / Stable records

Every relationship has a permanent claimId, a relationType, an evidenceType, a statement, endpoint node IDs, dates, dateBasis, source IDs and a textual source locator. IDs use the prefixes AD-NE- and AD-CA- for the initial research batches. They identify records, not evidence quality or a chronological ordering.

Sources carry a title, publisher, direct URL and consultation date. Locators describe the biography paragraph or archive section supporting a claim. Source material remains the property of its respective publisher. The downloadable dataset is a structured compilation of short paraphrases, not reproduced archival documents.

Corrections should amend a record under its existing ID and document the revision. Distinct new assertions receive new IDs; removed IDs should be retired rather than recycled. This first edition was curated on 2026-10-06.

Portraits / Image records

This edition includes 61 identifiable archival portraits. Each image has a separate record for its creator, source image page, rights statement or reuse license, identity reference, and any crop or conversion. Portrait attribution is visible in the person’s dossier and available in the complete image ledger. Missing portraits are marked explicitly; commemorative depictions without reliable likenesses are not substituted.

Photographs are shown in grayscale with a light sepia treatment for visual consistency. These presentation changes do not establish the original image’s date or appearance. A portrait’s source is evidence for the image record, not independent proof of every relationship attached to that person.

05 / Source catalogue

84 institutional and archival references. The relationship detail panel connects each claim to its source and locator.
